Next generation ANT APx featured in Nordic’s nRF51 SoC series

First-ever ANT single chip solution combines cost, power and size efficiencies with ecosystem of proven devices

Cochrane, Alberta (PRWEB) June 28, 2012 -- ANT Wireless ("ANT" www.thisisant.com), a division of Dynastream Innovations Inc., today announces the first-ever ANT SoC (system on a chip); successor to Nordic’s ANT nRF24AP2 family,  the Nordic nRF51422.  Designed specifically to optimize ultra low power network solutions such as sport, fitness and health monitoring devices, this new single chip solution is also backward compatible with millions of existing ANT and ANT+ products.  The ANT SoC lowers system development costs with further ease of integration and savings in power and BOM costs than the already-proven Nordic ANT products.

“The latest part in the ANT family from Nordic will enable the long standing goal of single chip RF sensor devices, which is a huge milestone,” stated Rod Morris, Vice President, Dynastream.  “There’s nothing like it in the market and ANT presents a distinct advantage with proven ANT+ profiles and immediate connection to the great variety of available ANT+ devices.”
With the increase in user acceptance in our everyday lives, complex and intertwined applications of wireless sensors and networks are being defined.  These use cases often require secure individual and conference modes of communication with sensors, a function easily supported by ANT+ but not by other star-only network technologies.  Certain examples include coaching applications, individual medical data sharing to multiple displays, point of purchase, one-to-many broadcast modes, etc.

ANT entered the ULP wireless sector in 2005 and has continually led in lowest power, complex functionality and reliable interoperability through ANT+, becoming the defacto standard for digital wireless sport and fitness PAN networks.

“We’re proud of our long-standing relationship with ANT and the game-changing products we continually offer the industry,” stated Geir Langeland, Director of Sales & Marketing, Nordic Semiconductor.  “Since partnering with ANT in 2005, we’ve virtually created the PAN market.  We’ve focused on the needs of the market and collaborated with ANT and leading brands to provide the right solutions at the right time.”

Out of the box, the nrf51422 SoC can offer quick time to market for:

  • sport
  • fitness
  • health
  • point of information, point of purchase tags
  • asset tracking
  • product security
  • home and industrial automation.

Supplied pre-programmed with the ANT protocol stack, the nRF51422 offers the same features expected in ANT silicon products, plus significant application space and continued support of eight independent master or slave channels. In addition, the Nordic ANT SoC includes:

  • Asynchronous and event driven SVC based API;
  • Run-time protection;
  • Broadcast, Acknowledged, and Burst communication modes;
  • Support for up to eight concurrent ANT channels;
  • 60kbps burst rate – 300% faster than previous generation;
  • Significant application space – ANT requires less than 32kB code space and 2kB of RAM, leaving more that 224kB flash and 14kB RAM for application code;
  • Compared to two-chip implementations using Nordic’s previous generation nRF24AP2, the nRF51422 can slash power consumption by up to 50%.

About ANT / ANT+ (www.thisisant.com)
ANT is a proven protocol and silicon solution for ultra-low power (ULP) practical wireless networking applications.
ANT+ facilitates interoperability between ANT+ Alliance member devices and the collection, automatic transfer and tracking of sensor data. Applicable in sport, wellness management and home health monitoring, ANT+ (built on the base ANT protocol) defines device profiles that specify data formats, channel parameters and network keys. The ANT+ Alliance is an open special interest group of companies who have adopted the ANT+ promise of interoperability. The Alliance ensures standardized communications through optimized brand value and partnerships with other top tier products.

The company behind ANT Wireless is Dynastream Innovations Inc. Dynastream was established in 1998 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Garmin Ltd. in December 2006. Dynastream is based in Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, and is a world innovator in the research and development of inertial and wireless technology. www.dynastream.com
