NPE’s WASP ANT+/WiFi Bridge Expands Possibilities for Group Monitoring

WASP’s collection and distribution technology combines WiFi and ANT+ to create a cost effective and efficient monitoring solution

If versatility and efficiency for group monitoring is top-of-mind, then North Pole Engineering’s WASP (WiFi ANT Sync Pod) offers the perfect solution. This revolutionary technology enables mobile, rechargeable and flexible connectivity solutions ideal for monitoring sensor information from groups of people or devices.

A WASP is a standalone bridge unit that enables ANT+ connectivity through WiFi networks to other devices or over the Internet. WASP devices are strategically placed within a desired area or attached to the user to capture real-time biometric information. The WASP device(s) join the local network and/or other specified devices on the network. They then pair with ANT+ devices within the coverage area to wirelessly communicate data through the internet to the desired monitoring location & audience.

“WASP is a game changer for how ANT+ radio technology can be used,” said NPE’s Director of Engineering, Rick Gibbs. “Utilizing the interoperable architecture of ANT+, a WASP enables one-to-many, many-to-one or many-to-many wireless connections in a single environment. The WASP acts as a bridge facilitating the collection of data. It is an easier method of aggregation as it doesn’t require a dedicated display device such as a watch or a phone to collect sensor data. Instead of collecting the data on your device and uploading it to an application, WASP Technology, through the use of ANT+, automatically does it for you making it the most convenient and efficient monitoring solution available.”

“ANT+ is the ideal solution for WASP because it has the lowest power battery and can have simultaneous connection to multiple devices,” added Gibbs. “The ability of ANT+ to pair with another device automatically makes it the most efficient technology on the market; after the initial configuration of the ANT+ devices, the user no longer needs to worry about the delivery of information.”

WASP Technology enables new user experiences in a variety of environments, which primarily include four market segments:

Sport and Fitness Monitoring
• High-end athletic training where coaching staff can use real time monitoring & analysis of athlete biometric information to improve the athlete’s workout session and performance when in competition.
• Any indoor/outdoor group classes (aerobics, Zumba, indoor cycling, etc) where the instructor and members want to be able to monitor real-time information such as heart rate, speed and power to improve the quality of the training effort.
• Running/biking/rowing clubs that want to capture group workout information for its members.
• Sports enthusiasts within citywide WiFi networks that want biometric information broadcast for social media and other purposes.

Home Care Health Monitoring
• Aging Independently – medication reminders, motion sensors, personal tracking, and notification services.
• Health and Fitness Management (including weight management and training programs) – heart rate monitors, activity monitors, calorimeters, weight scales, body mass index measurements, linked fitness equipment, ideally suited for real-time biometric feedback for group fitness classes.
• Disease Management – blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters and pulse oximeters.
• Anyone who wants to capture biometric wellness information and broadcast to social media.

Lifestyle and Wellness Management
• Corporate group-wellness monitoring efforts driven through 3rd party administrators, fitness clubs, communities, health care systems, etc.
• Health insurance providers, health care organizations, and individuals concerned with their wellness have begun utilizing body worn sensors as feedback devices to help them modify their behaviors towards a healthier lifestyle.

Connected Devices/Smart Systems
• Industries can monitor and control facilities, inventories, security, asset tracking, and countless other applications. The purpose of the data capture is then to provide feedback to create smart systems or systems that can be controlled by users through their phones, the internet or other connected devices.
• A homeowner can remotely monitor and control devices such as the garage door, lights, etc.
