ANT+ Advantages

ANT+ occupies a unique and established position within the ultra low power wireless industry.  Designed from the ground up to solve real problems, ANT+ (based on the ANT protocol) is the lightest solution available with the ability to scale into complex network topologies and communication methods.

One to many (Broadcast)

  • What is it?
      • Ability for one wireless transmit node to send to many receiver nodes
      • Fundamental functionality for most ANT+ sensors
  • ANT+ Advantage
      • Any display (Receiver) or sensor (Transmitter) can be removed and other displays (Receivers) will continue to be able to receive data
  • Use Cases (Sport & fitness, health & wellness, asset management)
    • Sport & Fitness

      • The relationship of a receiver to a transmitter is ad-hoc and therefore the receivers can go in and out of connection without affecting other receivers.
      • Running: HR sensor sending data to watch (display) + smartphone (display) + coach
      • Cycling: HR, speed&cadence sending data to watch (display) + smartphone (display) + cycle computer (display) + coach
      • In the gym: HR sensor sending data to watch (display) + fitness machine (display) + main class monitor coach (display)

      Health and Wellness

      • The relationship of a receiver to a transmitter is ad-hoc and therefore the receivers can go in and out of connection without affecting other receivers.
      • Medical sensor: sensor sending data to watch (display) + smartphone (display) + home health hub + doctor @clinic

Point of Information – Inventory Information

      • Product information tags broadcast to multiple readers
      • Multiple readers can access information simultaneously
      • Multiple readers can interact (they have a two way data interaction) with product information tag concurrently
      • Museum/public attraction information tags collecting details of visitors while sending description detail of the exhibit
      • Point of purchase tags working with smart phone app and capturing shopper feedback and demographics while advertising.
      • Warehouse location tags communication position to WAN connected readers

many to one

  • What is it?
    • • Ability of a large number of transmitter nodes to be received by a single receiver node
      • Ability to have hundreds of like transmitters coexisting without collisions
      • ANT supports a variety of ‘many to one’ topologies offering variable power consumption and latency models.
      • Fundamental functionality for most ANT+ sensors.

  • ANT+ Advantage
    • • Any sensor can be removed and display will continue to receive data from others
      • Hundreds of transmitters can co-exist without collision

  • Use Cases (Sport & fitness, health & wellness, asset management)
    • Sport & Fitness

      • Training classes: spin class participants sending speed or other data to main class LCD monitor.
      • Race events: participant station logging
      • Cycling peloton co-existence

      Health and Wellness

      • Corporate wellness programs: employee activity monitors automatically download info to corporate office data station when arriving at office

      Inventory control

      • Location of the asset handling equipment when product put away
      • Tracking of warehouse staff and equipment

proximity

  • What is it?
    • • Ability to create a communication (establish) when location conditions are met
      • Proximity pairing a basic ANT+ functionality

  • ANT+ Advantage
      • The ANT protocol is very ad-hoc friendly and can manage devices coming together or separating
      • Dramatically improves the pairing process of unknown masters to slaves
  • Use Cases (Filtering, security, location-based applications)
    • Sport& Fitness

      • In the gym group environment: pairing HR or other sensors to fitness machines. Filter based on distance

      Security

      • Computers: lock screens when away

      Point of Information/Point of Sale

      • Distance from information point to control the access to information coming from the inventory tags.  This will allow only readers within a certain range to access the data.

master - slave (relay)

  • What is it?
    • • Ability of any node to concurrently assume multiple wireless behaviours
      • Fundamental functionality for most ANT+ sensors

  • ANT+ Advantage
      • Any device can be any combination of master and slave functions, concurrently
      • Allows creation of relay stations
        • Sensor to sensor
        • Display to display
        • Sensor to display to display
  • Use Cases
    • Maintaining backward compatibility with new approaches for sensors

      • The Garmin Vector cycling power meter is a power meter using two physically separate devices, one on each pedal
      • All previous cycling power meters have been a single device with a single connection to a display device
      • ANT flexibility allows the pedals to communicate togther to aggregate data, while also creating a backwards compatible single connection to a display device

      Aggregating and re-transmitting information

      • Team/Peloton Cycling race: single rider on team collects data from other team sensors and sends to uplink node or coach in pursuit vehicle

      Combining collected information to provide

      • New device collects input from multiple legacy sensors to mathematically extract new types of information and transmit result to main display.

high density

  • What is it?
      • Ability of multiple, distinct wireless networks to operate successfully and concurrently with one another
      • Fundamental functionality for all ANT+ sensors
      • The ability to deploy hundreds of transmitters in RF range without them colliding in the RF space.
  • ANT+ Advantage
      • Makes it possible to feature dozens of sensors and hubs in one location.  Eg.  80 Indoor Cycling bikes in a room with power meters paired to computers and each Heart Rate tracking independently.
  • Use Cases
    • Wireless transmissions react to presence of other signals to ensure successful operation

Useful in highly congested environments in sport and fitness

      • Sport & Fitness
      • Large spin-class environment
        • Each participant uses own set of monitors in separate star configurations
        • HR, Speed, Cadence, power, to watch &  fitness machine
        • 80 participants, 4 transmissions per == 320 communications
        • No coordination between stars is required to perform 100%
        • works.
      • Cycling group
      • 10+ riders having their own star network of devices
      • HR, Speed, Cadence, Power
      • Cooperation required for successful operation

      Health and Wellness

      • Corporate wellness programs need to find, associate, and upload stored data at a company entrance
      • Hundreds of beacons may be present and the transition from beacon to transfer must be simple

       Asset management

      • Hundreds of tags on a pallet, container must all be heard
