How to properly label boxes for easy unpacking?

Last time I moved, I thought I had everything under control. I packed room by room, sealed the boxes nicely, and just wrote things like “kitchen” or “bedroom” on top. Big mistake. When we arrived at the new place, I couldn’t find basic stuff like phone chargers or clean towels. I ended up opening half the boxes just to find one small item. It was exhausting after a long moving day. Now I’m getting ready to move again, and I really want to avoid that chaos. I’ve heard people talk about numbering boxes or adding more detailed notes, but I’m not sure what actually works in real life. How do you properly label boxes so unpacking feels organized instead of overwhelming?

Oh wow, I’ve definitely been there. During my last move, I realized that just writing the room name isn’t enough. What helped me was creating a simple numbering system and keeping a notes list on my phone with what’s inside each box. I also used colored tape for different rooms so movers could spot things quickly.
I actually found a really helpful guide about a labeling system that explains how to label moving boxes in a practical way. It breaks things down clearly without overcomplicating it. After reading it, I started marking boxes on two sides (not just the top) and adding short keywords like “daily use” or “fragile – glass.” It made unpacking so much smoother because I could prioritize what to open first instead of guessing.

Reading this makes me think about how much small details matter during a move. I’ve only moved a couple of times, but each time I underestimated how tiring unpacking can be. It’s funny how packing feels productive and organized, but once you’re in the new place, everything looks the same in brown boxes. I don’t have a specific system myself, but I’ve noticed that planning even simple things ahead of time saves a lot of stress later. Moving is already a big change, so anything that makes the transition calmer is probably worth the effort.
