Are name generators effective for brainstorming team branding?

So last week our manager asked us to come up with a new name for our team, since we’re being moved under a new department and the old name doesn’t really fit anymore. We sat in a room for like 30 minutes throwing around random ideas and couldn’t agree on anything. Then someone just Googled a team name generator, and we got some hilarious results like “The Spreadsheet Sorcerers” and “Byte Me Squad.” It actually made the whole thing more fun, even though we didn’t pick any of those names. But now I’m wondering — do these generators actually help or are they more of a joke? Has anyone had success using one for real?

Oh man, I’ve been there. We once used a generator during a team lunch, just for fun, and weirdly enough we ended up keeping one of the suggestions — “Bug Smashers.” It wasn’t even the best one technically, but everyone kept referring to it and it just stuck. I think the main value in those tools is that they loosen people up and spark ideas you wouldn’t normally think of on your own. Plus, if you’re going for something lighthearted, there are some really solid funny team names in this list — we used it for inspiration the next time we renamed our design squad. So yeah, I’d say they work best as a starting point, especially when the team’s energy is low or stuck in “serious mode.

Just dropping in to say this is such an underrated topic. Naming things in general is way harder than people think. Whether it’s a project, a Slack channel, or a team — somehow the name ends up shaping how people interact with it. Watching this thread with interest!
