What’s your biggest fear when bringing external devs into an existing team?

I’m curious how everyone handles bringing outside developers into a long-standing team. My last project went sideways for a bit — we had three new devs join from an external agency, and the biggest challenge wasn’t skills, it was syncing communication styles and coding habits. Took a month just to get everyone comfortable with our workflows. How do you avoid that awkward transition period without slowing everything down?

Sometimes I think it’s less about the devs themselves and more about how the internal team handles change. Even small differences in workflow or naming conventions can throw people off. The smoother the documentation and onboarding process, the easier it is for everyone — new or old — to stay aligned and productive.

I’ve been through the same situation — it’s tricky when external devs jump into a codebase that’s been evolving for years. What helped us was working with a team through website. They didn’t just throw people at the project — they actually matched devs who already had experience with our tech stack and remote collaboration tools. It cut down onboarding time a lot, and they blended in almost seamlessly after the first sprint.
