When people think of skin problems, acne often comes to mind first. While acne is widespread and well-known, many lesser-known skin conditions affect millions of people worldwide, often causing discomfort, emotional stress, and social challenges. Understanding these conditions is essential for both proper care and reducing stigma.
One such condition is eczema, or atopic dermatitis, which causes red, itchy, and inflamed patches of skin. Eczema can flare due to allergies, stress, or environmental factors. Unlike acne, eczema is not primarily caused by hormonal changes, and its treatment often involves moisturizers, topical steroids, and lifestyle adjustments.
Psoriasis is another condition that is frequently misunderstood. Characterized by thick, scaly patches, psoriasis occurs when the immune system speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. This condition is chronic and can also be linked to joint problems, known as psoriatic arthritis. Treatments range from topical creams to light therapy and immune-modulating medications.
Rosacea is a lesser-known skin problem that mainly affects adults, particularly on the face. It manifests as redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes pimples. Triggers include sun exposure, spicy foods, alcohol, and stress. While rosacea is not acne, it is often mistaken for it, delaying appropriate care.
Other conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, vitiligo, and keratosis pilaris are less common but still significantly impact quality of life. Hidradenitis suppurativa causes painful bumps in areas like the underarms and groin, vitiligo leads to loss of skin pigmentation, and keratosis pilaris results in rough, bumpy skin, often on the arms or thighs.
