These two tasks—monitoring and management—are facilitated by RMM software and professional services automation, usually with the use of an agent. For the most part, you need a local agent in order to fully benefit from your RMM tools, while there are some things that are possible (we'll investigate those a little later).

It's easy to see why RMM is necessary given the nature of work nowadays. 98% of workers want to work remotely at least occasionally, and 40% already do, according to studies. When equipment problems inevitably arise for those remote workers, you want to minimize downtime and productivity loss by getting things fixed as quickly as possible. This implies that being able to connect to someone's computer and troubleshoot live is essential.
If you have walked a relative through setting up a new piece of technology, such as a smartphone, you are aware of how agonizing troubleshooting can be. Even the most tech-savvy of us find it difficult to go in blind. It is invaluable to be able to see exactly what is happening.

Knowing when things are going wrong, however, is much more crucial than solving a problem while it's happening. It's far easier to solve that issue with the least amount of interruption and downtime if you can detect a failing hard drive before a server becomes inaccessible or recognize when a deviation needs more memory.
