Hi IPAC,
Please consider the following:
A. Data - What data do I want to transmit? Is there already an ANT+ device profile for this?
B. Display Device - Is the Garmin Virb XE Camera the device you want to ultimately transmit to or are you just using this device for debugging purposes?
C. Is this a device that you are developing commercially, or is this a hobby/side-project?
Things I'd like you to know:
(1) Broadcasting custom data through the ANT+ Heart Rate Monitor device profile is not acceptable.
(2) In terms of choosing a chip, you may use whichever chip best suits your use-case and product needs. A list of modules is available
here. If you are just getting started, I would suggest a development or evaluation kit to get you started. Development Kit Manuals are available
here.
(3) If you are just getting started, I would highly discourage you from attempting to talk directly to the Garmin Virb Camera. Please use
SimulANT+ or ANTWareII to simulate a display device that can hear your sensor device can talk to your sensor. Also, please read through the documents linked
here.
If displaying your sensor data on the Garmin Virb is your end goal, please know that the Virb works as a display only for the ANT+ device profiles it chooses to support. The only way to display your sensor's data on the Virb is to have the Virb adopt an ANT+ profile designed for the type of data that your sensor is ANT+ certified to transmit, both of which are serious endeavors. Please contact us directly to discuss your use case and options if there is no ANT+ profile currently that supports your use-case and this is the path you wanted to go down.
